Nigeria has secured a seat in Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country. The election was held on Friday, 28 November 2025, during the IMO General Assembly in London, where member states voted Nigeria back onto the influential governing council.
The successful campaign was led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, who described the outcome as the result of over a year of sustained and strategic diplomatic engagement. According to the Minister, the victory followed months of intensive shuttle diplomacy, targeted bilateral engagements, and consistent advocacy across key countries and maritime blocs.
This election represents Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council after a 14-year absence, restoring the nation’s strategic voice within the global maritime community. Nigeria’s renewed presence on the council underscores its commitment to international shipping governance, maritime safety, and sustainable development, while reaffirming its growing influence in global maritime affairs.
